About

Jake Mallove, MA, LMFT

Hi, I’m Jake. I’m glad you’re here.

My journey to this work was long and certainly not straightforward. I got my BA in Theater from Occidental College and worked in Hollywood for 10 years. Ultimately, I veered into psychology and mental health and have found the two blend well and the creative experience deeply informs my work. Coming from a background in arts and entertainment, I bring a holistic energy to the room, integrating the mind-body connection in psychotherapy with mindfulness, creative arts, and humor. I am sensitive to the process of psychotherapy – knowing finding the right person can be difficult and exhausting. I strive to create a warm, non-judgmental space where clients feel seen, safe, and supported. You are not alone; I am here to help you take charge of your own life.

I got my Masters in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles where I specialized in LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy. This is a population I not only personally belong to, but am passionate about tailoring the therapy process to the specific challenges and needs this community experiences.

I began my clinical training at APLA Health where I conducted ongoing psychotherapy with individuals and couples as well as facilitated a Gay Men’s Intimacy Group. I focused on the specific needs of gay men including intimacy, internalized homophobia, body image issues, sexual trauma, the pervasive effects of microaggressions, and issues of shame, pride, and self-esteem.

I continued my training at Paradigm Treatment Center, a residential treatment center in Malibu, CA where I conducted adolescent, family and group therapy for teens ages 12-17 as they navigated behavioral issues, suicidality, trauma, and co-occurring substance use. That experience sharpened my skills in working within multidisciplinary teams and providing care in high-intensity and crisis environments.

Basically, whatever you’re working with, I can handle.

This can be an overwhelming process and I'm so glad you're taking the first step. Let’s find a path toward change and self-discovery together. I look forward to meeting you.

FAQs

  • An MFT is a trained professional specializing in providing therapy for individuals, couples, and families. Unlike other therapeutic roles, MFTs specifically focus on relationships and the impact they have on mental health and well-being. You do not need to be married or be seeking family therapy to utilize an MFT – this is a common misconception! On the contrary, I am trained to understand how familial systems and other relational dynamics impact the individual. I work from a systems perspective, considering how interconnected relationships influence one another. This holistic view allows for a comprehensive understanding of the challenges clients may be facing. I can help you build healthier connections, navigate challenges, and achieve positive change in your life.

  • I am currently seeing clients in person in West Hollywood or virtually online, and am happy to collaborate on timing that works for your schedule.

  • Please reach out for a complimentary 15-minute consultation to see if we’d be a good fit. I will generally respond within 24 hours, but please keep in mind that I work during business hours and if I get an inquiry outside of those hours it may take longer.

  • My session fee is $195 for individual therapy sessions (50 minutes) and $250 for couples (50 minutes). If need be, I can provide a sliding scale on a case-by-case basis. For families, please reach out directly to discuss options.

Sessions longer than 50 minutes are offered at a separate rate.

If I am not able to accommodate your financial situation, I will try my best to assist you in finding appropriate referrals.

I find it is often best to discuss fees during our initial 15 minute consultation. Feel free to contact me with questions.

  • I am an out-of-network provider which means I do not accept insurance at this time. However, I am happy to provide a receipt called a “superbill” to those who may be reimbursed by their insurance company for costs they pay out of pocket. Prior to starting therapy, please contact your insurance company to confirm they reimburse for out-of-network providers.

  • You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
